Spacetime Continuum

SOOKIE: Morels are fine.
JACKSON: [putting box down] Did anyone else feel the shift in the spacetime continuum?

The Spacetime Continuum is a mathematical model of the Universe which combines the three dimensions of the physical world with the fourth dimension of Time. Scientists understand Time to be another dimension of Space.

  1. This is a reference to Douglas Adams’ novel LIFE, THE UNIVERSE, AND EVERYTHING, chapter two.

“I have detected,” he said, “disturbances in the wash.”
    “The wash?” said Arthur.
    “The space-time wash,” said Ford.
Arthur nodded, and then cleared his throat.
“Are we talking about,” he asked cautiously, “some sort of Vogon laundromat, or what are we talking about?”
“Eddies,” said Ford, “in the space-time continuum.”
“Ah,” nodded Arthur, “is he? Is he?” He pushed his hands into the pocket of his dressing gown and looked knowledgeably into the distance.
    “What?” said Ford.
“Er, who,” said Arthur, “is Eddy, then, exactly?”
    Ford looked angrily at him.
    “Will you listen?” he snapped.
“I have been listening,” said Arthur, “but I’m not sure it’s helped.”

  2. Einstein talked about spacetime distorting, warping and curving, so the idea of the spacetime continuum being in a state of change was already built into the scientific model. I think both the great Douglas Adams, and the writers of “Gilmore Girls”, were aware of this. Not saying they couldn’t have read “Life, the Universe, and Everything”, but that’s not enough to make it a reference. (“The Simpsons” also discussed the idea in more than one episode, and the chances of of them watching “The Simpsons” is even higher).
